A rare and Beautiful Early French Folk Art Armoire from Ils Sur la Sorgue 

A rare early French armoire, richly layered with history, character and hand-painted decoration. Crafted from solid timber, this piece dates to the 18th–early 19th century, with its beautifully irregular form, pegged construction and softly faceted corners speaking to pre-industrial craftsmanship.

The doors retain original hand-painted panels, featuring naïve floral and foliate motifs typical of French provincial folk art. The painted scenes are worn and softened with time, revealing layers of patina that sit beautifully against the darkened timber ground. Each brushstroke and area of loss adds to the authenticity and visual depth of the piece.

The slightly angled sides, heavy cornice and simple block feet give the armoire a strong, architectural presence, while the painted decoration brings warmth and poetry. A true statement piece — equally at home in a country house, refined rustic interior or layered contemporary space.
